Město v éře globalizace a digitalizace je definováno spíše dynamikou virtuálních vztahů, než stabilitou materiální struktury. Ke „kamennému“ městu se dnes přidává neviditelná vrstva procesů a toků, které jsou nezbytné k zajištění života města. Říká se jí virtuální město, město sítí nebo meta-city.
Meta-city je virtuální vrstva města, která leží nad jeho materiální formou.
Podstata infrastruktury tohoto nového města je neviditelná. Co bylo dříve hmotné, se dnes virtualizuje: nejen že platíme virtuálními penězi, dokonce i nemovitosti se dostávají do pohybu, když se v prostředí trhu proměňují v informaci. Infrastruktura je také architektura. Dnes k dopravě, kanalizaci a rozvodům vody a energií přibývá fyzicky neviditelná vrstva virtuálního města, města digitálních telekomunikačních sítí. Dematerializace pohybu informací kupodivu není provázena menší mírou fyzického pohybu osob. Naopak, paralelní trendy globalizace a urbanizace mají za přímý následek četnější přesuny osob na malé i velké vzdálenosti, různou rychlostí a různými prostředky. Dříve skoro každá činnost byla spjatá s místem: dnes se místo stává arbitrérní. Lidé tráví stále více času na cestě a tráví hodně času v tom, co Marc Augé nazval „ne-místa“: dálnice, nádraží, letiště, nákupní střediska… Multifunkční komplexy, navázané na dopravní síť, „ne-místa“ jsou dnes významným tématem architektury. Jak se mění pojem „místa“ ve virtuálním světě? Jak si architektura „ne-míst“ může podržet realitu? Je vůbec možné nadále pracovat s protikladem „místo / ne-místo“? Je v našem světě zvýšené mobility ještě platný? Zdá se, že je to poněkud zastaralý, nostalgický koncept. Jak by si poradil s virtuálním „místem“ v kyberprostoru? Z nové situace vyplývají nové principy čtení města. Jaké jsou a jak je dešifrovat?
